Fujifilm X-T30 and 16mm f2.8 – The Camera Crowd

Fujifilm X-T30 and 16mm f2.8

By February 14, 2019 No Comments

Straight off the back of the EOS RP and RF lenses announcement, Fujifilm are coming in with its successor to the popular X-T20 and new XF 16mm f2.8 lens. The camera should be retailing at $899 USD & the lens for $399 USD.

  • 26.1MP APS-C X-Trans BSI CMOS 4 Sensor
  • X-Processor 4 with Quad CPU
  • DCI and UHD 4K30 Video
  • F-Log Gamma
  • 2.36m-Dot OLED Electronic Viewfinder
  • 3.0″ 1.04m-Dot Tilting LCD Touchscreen
  • 425-Point Phase-Detection Autofocus
  • Extended ISO 80-51200, 30 fps Shooting
  • Bluetooth and Wi-Fi; Sports Finder Mode
  • Body weighs 383g

While its not full frame like the EOS RP, Fuji’s APS-C sensors have been much loved in its X-T3 and X-H1, and the smaller sensor has been allowing them to put reasonably aggressive video stats in its latest bodies. It can shoot 4K30 at up to 200mbps as well 1080p 120fps. In addition to F-Log, ti also packs its traditional film simulations Eterna and Velvia.

The 4K in the X-T30 is downsampled 6K. Its also capable of shooting $K DCI which is in a 17:9 ratio. When paired with the Atoms Ninja V the X-T30 can output video in F-Log at 4:2:2 10bit via HDMI.

Despite files being bigger, once a recording reaches 4GB a new file is made which has to be viewed separately. Although the recording is uninterrupted, this can be a pain and should’ve been fixed after the X-T3.

The sensor contains 100% Phase Detect AF coverage as well as Face and Eye-AF similar to the Sony and Canon systems. A new update to the firmware allows eye tracking to be maintained even when the subject looks away.

The 3” LCD only tilts up and down, meaning it is of no use to vloggers.

The Fujifilm X-T30 will retail at $899 making it significantly cheaper than some of its competitors from canon or Sony, with the added advantage of the ever expanding X-mount lenses.

Some of the competing cameras:

Canon EOS RP $1,299 USD

Fuji X-T3 $1,499 USD

Sony a7 III – $1,998 USD

Nikon Z6 – $1,996.95

New Lens

The other announcement from Fujifilm was their new 16mm f2.8, which has a 35mm equivalent of 24mm. It features:

  • 10 lens elements in 8 groups, including 2 aspherical elements
  • Weather & Dust resistant
  • 49mm filter thread
  • Rounded 9-blade aperture
  • Mechanical Aperture ring

It’s set to retail at $399 USD.
